New data showing a sharp decline in iPhone shipments due to weakness in China is unwelcome news for investors in Apple. Sluggish iPhone sales this year have been well documented, and they're the reason Apple shares have fallen roughly 9% in 2024. First-quarter numbers from International Data Corporation (IDC) show the extent of the weakness, with iPhone shipments dropping 9.6% year-over-year to 50.1 million units — its sharpest year-over-year loss out of the top five smartphone brands. That put Samsung back in first place for phone shipments, after Apple held the crown for all of 2023 . Just consider three core holdings in the portfolio: Apple , Starbucks , and Nvidia . Nvidia generates 21% of its overall revenue from Mainland China, while Apple gets 19%, and Starbucks 9%. Xiamen-based Luckin Coffee, for example, overtook Starbucks in market share in China during 2023, with double the retail locations there. However, Nvidia still dominates the AI chip market in China, and it's difficult to see its rivals catching up anytime soon. The company has twice re-engineered chips for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. rules.

Apple has sold over 2.3 billion units of the iPhone and has over 1.5 billion active users, according to research from Demand Sage. Apple sold 1.4 million iPhones in 2007 with 80% of the sales coming in Q4. The company hit a major milestone — more than 50 million units sold — in 2011, with the help of the iPhone 4s. Apple's overall smartphone shipments fell 2.2% year-on-year in 2023, while the overall market fell 5%, IDC said. China's smartphone market has been hit because of an uncertain economic environment in the country and weak consumer spending. In 2023, Honor, a spin-off from Chinese company Huawei, held the second spot with 16.8% market share, followed by Vivo, Huawei and then Oppo. Another market research firm called Counterpoint Research also came out with China numbers on Thursday. Counterpoint said it expects the China market to record low single-digit year-on-year growth in 2024, the first year of growth since 2018.

A slower-than-expected recovery in China, the world's largest smartphone market, also weighed on overall phone sales. Apple and Transsion were the only brands in the top five to record growth in shipments last year, when the market declined 3.2% to 1.17 billion units and hit a decade low. Apple, however, is facing pressure in China from a resurgent Huawei as well as from budget Chinese brands. The iPhone-maker is offering rare discounts of as much as 5% on some models in the country to attract customers.

Apple became the world's largest smartphone maker in 2023 for the first time ever. Despite a rough start to 2024, we think the company can build on this momentum in the U.S. and China. Apple's frontrunner status was confirmed in separate industry research reports from International Data Corporation (IDC) on Monday and Canalys on Tuesday. To be sure, Apple's iPhone is facing intensified competition in China as domestic players like Huawei and Xiaomi have started offering high-end alternatives. Google on Wednesday unveiled a next-generation Pixel smartphones lineup that will be infused with more artificial intelligence tools capable of writing captions about photos that can also be altered by the technology. As has become common across the industry, most of the other technology in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones unveiled Wednesday will be similar to what has already been available in last year’s models. One of the main selling points of the new phones will be improved cameras, including more AI-empowered editing tools that will mostly be available on the Pixel 8 Pro. That will result in the Pixel 8 selling for $700 and the Pixel 8 Pro for $1,000 when they go on sale in stores next week. Despite generally getting positive reviews, the Pixel phones have barely made a dent in a market dominated by Samsung and Apple since Google began making the devices seven years ago.
